Designed to Thrive: The Five Pillars of Retirement Planning

by Jammie Avila and Kyle Kirwan

Aug 31, 2020 | Books, Finance

This book was written for the many people with whom we may never meet, who need help planning for retirement but don’t even know where to begin. If that sounds like you, that’s okay. You are not alone.

While this book is in no way a comprehensive look at preparing for retirement, and may not speak to your specific circumstances, we hope it will provide some insight on how to lay the foundations of your retirement and develop your own “blueprints,” so to speak.

We call our five-step planning process the Cornerstone Retirement Blueprint because the approach is like the planning and work that goes into a well-constructed house. All parts must be soundly constructed in and of themselves but must also fit together and function properly as an integrated whole.

The basic ideas and strategies we outline in this book are the culmination of our decades in the industry, our monthly public educational workshops/seminars, personal interviews, and years of broadcasting our message on the airwaves.

Our weekly radio show, “The Cornerstone Retirement Hour,” is also now available as a podcast where we have candid discussions about strategies and real-life financial issues facing Americans today.

In this book we draw from actual client experiences as the various concepts and strategies are covered. We hope you will find value in the information provided which you can convert into a personal strategy as you begin creating your own foundations for retirement.

Let’s get started!

“Jammie and his wife, Danielle, have been married for more than 20 years. They met while attending worship services at their church. They have been blessed with four wonderful children-Jace, Alexis, Mya and Ashton. The Avila’s welcomed a new member to their family last year in the form of a bouncy, energetic and often mischievous cockapoo named Hemi. He is considered the fifth child of the family!

Whether providing service through his church, at his kids’ schools or on the Board of Directors for HELP of Southern Nevada, giving back to the community is an important focus in Jammie’s life. Jammie has always been grateful for the work ethic that his mother, Kim, taught him. She has been one of his biggest inspirations and is the hardest-working woman he has ever known! Jammie created and co-hosted the longest-running local Las Vegas financial news show on AM radio for five years. With the advance of technology, he has decided to stay on the cutting edge and move from radio to podcasts.

Jammie’s latest passion is backyard grilling with family and friends on his Big Green Egg. Feel free to share your favorite barbecue recipes and secrets with him!

Although Jammie grew up a die-hard L.A. Rams fan, he has always been a “”Hometown Fan.”” He is more than excited to embrace the Silver and Black and is ready to help Raider Nation cheer our hometown team to victory in Allegiant Stadium!”

“Kyle was married at the age of 21, has two amazing kids, and his wife, Amanda, is still his putting up with him. His father-in-law always tells the same joke: “”I gave Kyle two things, my daughter and my money, and I haven’t asked for either one back -yet!”” Kyle’s daughter, Courtney, worked at the Cornerstone office throughout college and is now becoming a teacher for the Clark County School District.

Kyle moved to Henderson in 1982, was raised by a police officer and survived the 1988 PEPCON blast (Google YouTube/PEPCON explosion to learn more about the disaster). At the age of 22, Kyle worked for Hartford as an independent life agent where he discovered his love of providing solutions to the families he served. Kyle met Jammie and Dan in 2009, and they did their first educational workshop that year. Kyle and Jammie share a Class C motorhome. You can’t miss it on the road because there is a big picture of them on the back of the RV that shows them in the radio room recording their show.

Kyle is an avid pickleball player from his years of playing tennis in high school. Now he can be found on his backyard pickleball court when he’s not seeing his clients. And he loves hitting home runs in his softball league -no matter how rarely they happen.”
